What is soil health?

Soil health is the ongoing capacity of soil to support plant growth, cycle nutrients and hold water — measured through indicators like soil pH, NPK nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), soil moisture, soil temperature and electrical conductivity (EC). Good soil health means these indicators stay balanced season after season, so crops get what they need without excess fertilizer, water or soil degradation.

What is a soil sensor?

A soil sensor is a device that measures soil properties directly in the field by inserting a probe into the ground, instead of sending a sample to a laboratory. Basic sensors measure a single property like moisture; multi-parameter soil sensors like MatoSense measure soil pH, NPK nutrients, moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity all at once, giving an instant soil health snapshot in seconds.

What does a soil test sensor measure?

A soil test sensor measures the key properties that determine soil health: soil pH (acidity or alkalinity), NPK nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), soil moisture, soil temperature and electrical conductivity (EC, an indicator of salinity). The MatoSense sensor reads these values directly in the field and sends them to a live online dashboard, so you can track your soil in real time instead of waiting for lab results.

How does the MatoSense sensor measure soil health?

MatoSense uses the measurement techniques trusted worldwide for instant in-field soil assessment. Soil moisture is measured by Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR), which detects the change in the soil's dielectric constant caused by water content. Temperature uses thermal resistance — an internal thermistor whose electrical resistance changes with soil temperature. Electrical conductivity (EC) is measured from the current flow between pins, indicating dissolved salts (salinity). Soil pH uses potentiometry, measuring the voltage generated by hydrogen ions (H⁺) against a reference standard. NPK nutrients are estimated through spectral and electrochemical analysis of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium ion signals.

Is a soil sensor as accurate as a laboratory soil test?

A soil sensor gives you an instant, in-field approximation using well-known, globally trusted measurement techniques — it is the best way to understand your soil health immediately and track changes over time. However, sensor output is not a certified value. For high-accuracy, certified results — for example for regulatory, research or certification purposes — a laboratory soil test is always required. Most users combine both: continuous sensor monitoring for day-to-day decisions, and periodic lab tests for verification.

How do I test soil pH?

Soil pH can be tested with chemical test kits, lab analysis, or an electronic soil pH sensor. A sensor like MatoSense is the fastest option: insert the probe into moist soil and get a continuous digital pH reading. Most crops grow best in soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 — regular monitoring helps you correct acidic or alkaline soil before it hurts your yield.

What is an NPK soil test?
